“It’s in the same vein as the old Writeroom black/green style, but optimized for full screen on my 15-inch MacBook Pro, and uses Courier New for a bit of a typewriter look as well. I’m very happy with it and hope that others will be as well.”

Found Typewriter WriteRoom 3 for OS X Theme

Theme created by Jeff Chapman. In his own words:

“The font used is American Typewriter, which I understand is installed by default for Mac OS X nowadays. I created the theme on a MacBook Pro 15”, so the highest screen resolution supported with the background image at 100% size is 1440 x 900px. The background image is a heavily edited version of the “Paper Leather Texture” made available on Flickr (via Creative Commons license) at the following URL: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bartiservin/3785177730/. I’ve done my best to create a theme that is easy to read, easy on the eyes and a familiar but stylish use of paper backgrounds for WriteRoom.”

Added link to ‘Downloadable More Themes…’ in Themes menu.
‘Show Formatting Toolbar’ displays properly in all rich text documents.
Works better with QuickCursor, no untitled window opened, and always sends text back.
Documents ending in .html (and other extensions) are no longer changed to .txt on save.
‘File > Open New Windows…’ setting is now global instead of associated with current theme.
‘Select Word’ command works more like TextMate, selecting whitespace when appropriate.
Changed ‘Select Paragraph’ to use Shift-Command-L keyboard shortcut.

Full-Screen Keyboard Shortcuts in WriteRoom 3.0

Full-Screen Keyboard Shortcuts in WriteRoom 3.0:

We’ve heard a lot of (good-natured) grumblings regarding the change in the keyboard shortcut from ‘escape’ or ‘command+return’ to switch in and out of Full Screen Mode.

Escape key: This key is reserved by OS X to toggle autocomplete in text views. This had been a conflicting issue in WriteRoom 2, and a battle we couldn’t win in the long run.

As for command+return, it was best to go with the new OS X default behaviors. Now WriteRoom has 2 full screen modes, the current shortcuts avoid other potential conflicts with other default behaviors.

You can edit these commands yourself using the Keyboard preferences in OS X. If a particular shortcut combo doesn’t work, it may be reserved by the system.

Editing Keyboard Shortcuts (from the OS X Help Center):

Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Keyboard.
Click Keyboard Shortcuts, and then click Add (+).
Choose an application from the Application pop-up menu. If you want to set the same key combination for a menu command that appears in many applications, choose All Applications.

If the application you want to select does not appear in the list, choose Other and locate the application using the Open dialog. Some applications may not allow you to set keyboard shortcuts.

Type the menu command for which you want to set a keyboard shortcut in the Menu Title field.

You must type the command exactly as it appears in the application menu, including ellipses and any other punctuation. An ellipsis is a special character that looks like three periods. To type an ellipsis, press Option-semicolon, or use the Character Viewer. It may be difficult to know whether the command is written in the menu with a real ellipsis or with three periods, so if one does not work, try the other.

Click in the Keyboard Shortcut field and press the key combination that you want to assign to the menu command, and then click Add. You cannot use each type of key (for example, a letter key) more than once in a key combination.
Quit the application for which you added or changed a keyboard shortcut.
Restart the application to see the keyboard shortcut in the application’s menu.

Final Note:

Make sure that you have both menu items specified (Enter Full Screen / Exit Full Screen) The menu time title changes based on current full screen mode, so you need to setup the shortcut for both.

TaskPaper 2.0 for iOS crashing after upgrading? Haven't upgraded yet? READ THIS (please)!

For anyone upgrading from 1.x who installed the update and was met by a crash, it may have been caused by the search string. Anyone who installed and didn’t see a crash? No problem. A fix is in process, now that we know what’s at fault.

WORKAROUND if you’re still on 1.3 (if you haven’t upgraded, or you have a saved copy you can downgrade to):

Clear any active searches
Install TaskPaper 2.0

WORKAROUND if you’re already upgraded to 2.0 1. Export/backup your documents to your computer using iTunes document sharing (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4094) Note: If you were able to link with Dropbox and you know your files are fully synced there, you can skip this step.

Delete TaskPaper 2.0 from device
Reinstall TaskPaper 2.0 from the App Store
Turn on Dropbox sync at TaskPaper 2.0 iOS and put backed-up documents into ~/Dropbox/TaskPaper folder.

Background on issue: Before 2.0, the saved search string value was a simple ‘string’, but now it uses the dictionary type to save search string ‘per’ document name. Our bad. So, some people upgrading from TaskPaper 1.3 can be met with a crash when there is saved search string.

We’ve just released a new Bubbles for iOS update (For toddlers who need a fun distraction) that allows you to smash as many pumpkins as you want.

We are trying something new with this release. Bubbles is now a free download that comes with the tried and true blue bubbles set. For $0.99 each you can download additional Bubble sets, including Balloons, Dandelions, Fall Leaves, and Jack-O-Lanterns. The clay faces set is also still available as a separate free download.

Anyway, if you’ve got a toddler let us know how they like the new sets, and what you’d like to see in the future. We are still experimenting here.

Working on PlainText bug part II: Good news!

Thanks to an incredibly helpful tip-off from @JamesThomson, we have a fix for the UI glitch in PlainText and WriteRoom for iOS affecting older hardware (2nd generation iPod touch, iPhone 3G). And for the first time ever the bug wasn’t even our fault!

Many more big thank-yous go out to our incredibly helpful (and patient) beta testers who put up with build after build :-)

We will be submitting updates for PlainText 1.5.3 and WriteRoom 3.0.2 for iOS shortly, and re-submitting TaskPaper 2.0 for iOS. Here’s hoping for a speedy review process!

Working on PlainText bug

We’re working on a known issue that affects the recent releases of PlainText 1.5.2 and WriteRoom 3.0.1 (iOS). This bug only affects the iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 2nd generation running iOS 4.2.1.

An emergency beta got pulled together and we’ve sent out several test builds so far to figure out where the issue came from. After rolling the code all the back to 1.4.1 (April 2011), the issue still shows up in fresh builds. This may indicate a potential issue if the iOS 5 SDK is included when building the app.

This also affects TaskPaper 2.0 for iOS, which was ready for release this Monday. We’ve chosen to hold off on the TaskPaper release so that people on 2nd-generation iPhone and iPod touch devices won’t get gobsmacked by this bug.
